Meet Da Pawpaws

  • Steve Schluter

    Lead Vocals

Steve has over fifty years experience as a vocalist and audio engineer. He has been the owner of Corporate Lighting and Audio for twenty-nine years. He began playing in bands as a teenager, and was a member of The Sunlight Band, Bustin’ Luce (when he and his brother Mark first collaborated), The Brothers Band, and Da Funkey Pawpaws. In addition to being lead vocalist, he plays harmonica, percussion, and keyboard. He also lends his skills in audio engineering and production management to the band. Steve is hoping to bring the PawPaws into the next decade so some of the other PawPaws can become Grandpas.

  • Terry Savaski

    Drums

Terry started playing drums when he was 9 years old. When in junior high he put together a drum line and marched behind the Crescent City Strutters in most all of the parades in New Orleans. During that time, Terry had the opportunity to play with a Dixieland Jazz Band called Buck Brown and the Rhythm Masters.

He then went on to play with Dean Landry and the Satins, which was an oldies wedding band. At 15 years old he got a job playing with Bobby Cure and the Summertime Blues Band. He played all different types of music and played weddings, private events, and at a lot of nightclubs. After many years with the Summertime Blues Band, he played a large variety of music with the Sandpipers Band, a band that played a lot of large weddings and big events.

Terry played with a lot of New Orleans bands whenever they needed a drummer. When the world's fair opened in 1984, Terry played with a band called Dejuvue. He played the whole year at the fair and then life took over and he and his brother opened a boat business. At that point Terry had to temporarily leave the music behind.

Now that his daughter is grown and he’s getting ready to retire, Terry is ready to return to music. He always missed it and it feels great for him to have the opportunity to play with the Paw Paws.

In his career playing music, Terry has played just about every music venue in and around New Orleans. He has been lucky enough to have played on stage with a lot of the biggest musicians in New Orleans. His music career has provided him with the best memories, and he has met and played with the greatest people around.

Now Terry is looking forward to making more memories with the Paw Paws!

  • Jorge Schwarz

    Bass

Jorge is from Guatemala City, Guatemala, and has lived in the US since 1982. He started playing Cello thanks to the amazing public school music programs in Cleveland, Ohio. A year later, when Jorge was 13, the school purchased an upright bass and asked him if he wanted to play it (he has been playing bass ever since). He has lived in Miami, Florida, Cleveland Ohio, and even went to high school in Houston, Texas. Jorge majored in Physics at the University of Arkansas. He’s been all over the country!

Jorge graduated from LSU dental school in 1998. Here in New Orleans, Jorge has played with The Moonlighters, Swingroux, and the Funkey PawPaws. He currently plays with the choir at St. Joseph Church.

  • Mark Schluter

    Keyboard

Mark has been playing music since 3rd grade. He was a member of the Chalmette High Marching and Concert Band where he "played" the clarinet badly and was told he couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time during halftime celebrations. In fact, many of the movies you have seen on the big screen were inspired by his inept ability to play the clarinet and destroy the halftime show as he tripped up many of his fellow musicians (example: Revenge of the Nerds).

This, of course, prompted him to give up the clarinet and hide behind an organ and piano. Completing a music education degree at the universe of New Orleans he became an elementary school music teacher and choir director at St. Mary Magdalen School in Metairie. Working on a masters degree at Silverlake College in Manitowo, Wisconsin, he was approached about an opportunity to his own business. He now helps many families and businesses to invest and plan for their financial futures.

Mark supported himself through his college years by playing music for fraternities, sororities, nightclubs, weddings, as well as in a variety of bands. This band, Da Funkey PawPaws, has evolved into the five musicians that Mark says are some of the most fun guys he has ever played with. His children have married wonderful spouses and have provided 11 grandchildren to date. He is way ahead of the other PawPaws in this regard and hopes that the rest of them try to catch up. Good luck, PawPaws!
